Summary

In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a café which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years。 But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time。。。

From the author of Before the Coffee Gets Cold comes a story of four new customers each of whom is hoping to take advantage of Cafe Funiculi Funicula's time-travelling offer。

Among some faces that will be familiar to readers of Kawaguchi's previous novel, we will be introduced to:

The man who goes back to see his best friend who died 22 years ago
The son who was unable to attend his own mother’s funeral
The man who travelled to see the girl who he could not marry
The old detective who never gave his wife that gift。。。

This beautiful, simple tale tells the story of people who must face up to their past, in order to move on with their lives。 Kawaguchi once again invites the reader to ask themselves: what would you change if you could travel back in time?

Bello。 。。more

Anything time travel related is very nice to read。 I liked the ending, liked how slowly it was building up。

This is a nice little novel。 Nothing too intense。 Just a little meditation on life。 Almost a collection of short stories but there is a cafe and the regulars keeping it together。 However, each chapter has a different protagonist。 I'd give it 4。5 stars。 I haven't read the first one but I don't know that I needed to。 I will find out as I am definitely going to read "Before the Coffee Gets Cold" #1。 This is a nice little novel。 Nothing too intense。 Just a little meditation on life。 Almost a collection of short stories but there is a cafe and the regulars keeping it together。 However, each chapter has a different protagonist。 I'd give it 4。5 stars。 I haven't read the first one but I don't know that I needed to。 I will find out as I am definitely going to read "Before the Coffee Gets Cold" #1。 。。。more

My review for this book would be similar to what I wrote for the author’s Before the Coffee Gets Cold。 It has a unique simple style (perhaps due to translation from Japanese), and nicely poignant tales。I perhaps found the stories in this book a little less emotional for me overall, but I appreciated the additional “lesson” of living your life with happiness for those who you have lost。 Often our grief and guilt cause is to shut out life and avoid happiness, but this book makes the point that tho My review for this book would be similar to what I wrote for the author’s Before the Coffee Gets Cold。 It has a unique simple style (perhaps due to translation from Japanese), and nicely poignant tales。I perhaps found the stories in this book a little less emotional for me overall, but I appreciated the additional “lesson” of living your life with happiness for those who you have lost。 Often our grief and guilt cause is to shut out life and avoid happiness, but this book makes the point that those who loved us wanted only happiness for us so it is actually respectful of them for us to seek out joy after they are gone, regardless of how they died。 。。。more

I really liked the whole concept of this book。 A little cafe, tucked away in the streets of Tokyo allows people to time travel。 The experience comes with a very strict set of rules including that whatever happens in this moment in the past, the future does not change。 And they have to drink their coffee before it colds, or face the eternal consequences。 So why go if nothing changes? This narrative explores this through four short stories of sorts - "The Best Friend", "The Mother and Son", "The Lovers", and "The Married Couple"。 We also get glimpse into the characters who run this wee little shop of alternate universe moments。 The characters are simple but complex。 Each is on a journey, ultimately, to find happiness。I am really glad I randomly came across this book: while it misses the emotional mark to some extent, it certainly requires the reader to review the purpose of ones existence after a massive grief。 。。。more

this book is a beautiful addition to the first。 the new stories told in the same cafe are just as touching and more enjoyable。 there are certain stories i want more closure on, though, the characters themselves receive the closure they need to proceed with their lives。 i enjoyed getting to read about the staff at the cafe and learn more about them in this second novel。 the story is beautifully written and potentially better than the first。 i definitely recommend reading the first book first, and this book is a beautiful addition to the first。 the new stories told in the same cafe are just as touching and more enjoyable。 there are certain stories i want more closure on, though, the characters themselves receive the closure they need to proceed with their lives。 i enjoyed getting to read about the staff at the cafe and learn more about them in this second novel。 the story is beautifully written and potentially better than the first。 i definitely recommend reading the first book first, and if you enjoy that book you will certainly enjoy this one。 。。。more

This beautiful short read manages to develop it's characters and pack an emotional punch in 192 pages。 It is a book full of emotion, sadness and hope。 It is about a cafe where you can visit the past under certain rules such as you must be back before your coffee goes cold。 It was a five star read for me。'Life too, passes through difficult winters。But after any winter, spring will follow'。 This beautiful short read manages to develop it's characters and pack an emotional punch in 192 pages。 It is a book full of emotion, sadness and hope。 It is about a cafe where you can visit the past under certain rules such as you must be back before your coffee goes cold。 It was a five star read for me。'Life too, passes through difficult winters。But after any winter, spring will follow'。 。。。more

Read the first book last year and I fell in love with the cafe and all the heart-warming stories。 I also cried buckets reading each of the story because they were so so touching and warm and sad all at the same time。 Needless to say, I was very excited when the second book came out。 I thought that the first book had ended on a good note but I was still a little curious to find out what happened to the ghost and what Kazu’s backstory was。I was not disappointed reading this。 It has all the touchin Read the first book last year and I fell in love with the cafe and all the heart-warming stories。 I also cried buckets reading each of the story because they were so so touching and warm and sad all at the same time。 Needless to say, I was very excited when the second book came out。 I thought that the first book had ended on a good note but I was still a little curious to find out what happened to the ghost and what Kazu’s backstory was。I was not disappointed reading this。 It has all the touching elements from the first book and all the curiosity I had were answered。 This book continues to follow Kazu and Nagare in the cafe with an adorable little addition, Miki (Nagare and Kei’s daughter)。 There are new characters who came to the cafe in search of answers and closure by returning to the past。 As each story ends, I ask myself what I would change or who I want to see if I was given the chance to travel back in time。 Although this is quite a short book, each story just filled my soul with warmth。 I also cried reading this as much as the first one and I wish I could give everyone a big hug。 I just love the way Kawaguchi created a peaceful atmosphere around the cafe and how he slowly introduced each character and their ties to the cafe。 I really enjoyed reading each of the story and I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a nice heartwarming book to read。 。。。more

one of the first short stories book i have read in a while, and i enjoyed reading it。 Although it got a bit confusing and repetitive in the middle, i believe it was just to add emphasis and maybe also a bit lost in translation。 I felt as though when you finish one of the short stories, you are not content。 but when you finish the whole thing everything connects and gives a bit of purpose to the things that are being said。 About Kaname, she was mysterious yet intriguing but also frustrating to re one of the first short stories book i have read in a while, and i enjoyed reading it。 Although it got a bit confusing and repetitive in the middle, i believe it was just to add emphasis and maybe also a bit lost in translation。 I felt as though when you finish one of the short stories, you are not content。 but when you finish the whole thing everything connects and gives a bit of purpose to the things that are being said。 About Kaname, she was mysterious yet intriguing but also frustrating to read about。 In the end it all made sense, and the only way to enjoy this book is to push through and get through with it。 I have just learnt that there was a book previous to this, maybe I would understand things better that way but I think I was filled in with the appropriate amount of details just with this one。 Overall a good book to read when you are getting back in reading。 Things make sense, things are easy to understand。 Simple yet a dreamy book。 。。。more
